Will Porn Ever Be Mainstream?

Steven Daigle of mainstream "Big Brother" has now done work for C1R.com, among other studios.

When I think of how far gay people have come in the world—TV, movies, politics, etc.—I have to wonder if it will ever be acceptable for gay porn stars to in mainstream societal niches. There was that Republican candidate awhile back who got derailed cause he was caught on a date with a gay porn star, and that made me think, in ten years, will anyone care?

Female pornstar Sasha Grey played herself on Entourage, and those gay guys are all over Facebook, telling people where they’re performing (if they’re also go-go boys, etc), and no one’s protesting or reporting them. I think it would be really cool if an openly gay actor was dating a gay porn star, and admitted it. I’m sure many of them already use their services.  (For the record, I’m sure straight men date female porn stars, too.)

Right now, I would imagine their agents and managers would tell them it’s gonna hurt their careers, but I think that will change. There was a time when no gay man would admit to having HIV, let alone dating an HIV-positive man, and that has changed: I remember when Steve Kmetko was open about his relationship with Greg Louganis several years ago.

I mean, how hypocritical are we? Porn’s one of the biggest industries in the world, raking in billions a years. Everyone watches it, jerks off to it, buys it, downloads it, streams it. But it’s supposed to be a “bad thing.” When I think of how marijuana acceptance has changed in the past ten years, I’m more convinced that gay porn, too, will be something people are open about. At least I hope so.
